چکیده

The Simultaneous Nadir Overpass (SNO) method developed at NOAA/NESDIS has been used for the intersatellite calibration in the last few years with excellent results. The objective of this project is to establish and apply an accurate intersatellite calibration procedure to develop inter-satellite calibration data sets and characterize inter-satellite calibration bias, which will be useful for data users in developing time series from NOAA satellite data from 1980 to 2003. It uses the novel approach that takes advantage of inter-satellite calibration using simultaneous nadir overpass (SNO) observations at the orbital intersections between each succeeding pair of satellites. This will ensure the calibration consistency and quality for long-term climate studies, reduce the uncertainties about critical climate trends, and therefore facilitate the construction of long-term climate data records.

Intersatellite Calibration of HIRS Upper Tropospheric Water Vapor

Intersatellite calibration is carried out for the upper tropospheric water vapor (UTWV) data from clear-sky HIRS channel 12 measurement. As the intersatellite biases are scene brightness temperature dependent, an algorithm is developed to account for the varying biases with respect to brightness temperature. The bias correction data are derived from overlaps of monthly means of each 10-degree l...

Error Structure and Atmospheric Temperature Trends in Observations from the Microwave Sounding Unit

The Microwave Sounding Unit (MSU) onboard the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration polar-orbiting satellites measures the atmospheric temperature from the surface to the lower stratosphere under all weather conditions, excluding precipitation. Although designed primarily for monitoring weather processes, the MSU observations have been extensively used for detecting climate trends, an...

Radiometric Cross-Calibration of the Chilean Satellite FASat-C Using RapidEye and EO-1 Hyperion Data and a Simultaneous Nadir Overpass Approach

The absolute radiometric calibration of a satellite sensor is the critical factor that ensures the usefulness of the acquired data for quantitative applications on remote sensing. This work presents the results of the first cross-calibration of the sensor on board the Sistema Satelital de Observación de la Tierra (SSOT) Chilean satellite or Air Force Satellite FASat-C. RapidEye-MSI was chosen a...

NPP VIIRS and Aqua MODIS RSB Comparison Using Observations from Simultaneous Nadir Overpasses (SNO)

Suomi NPP (National Polar-orbiting Partnership) satellite (http://npp.gsfc.nasa.gov/viirs.html) began to daily collect global data following its successful launch on October 28, 2011. The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) is a key NPP sensor. Similar to the design of the OLS, SeaWiFS and MODIS instruments, VIIRS has on-board calibration components including a solar diffuser (SD)...

Intercalibration of microwave sounding unit with short overlaps

NOAA/NESDIS/Center for Satellite Applications and Research has been reprocessing and recalibrating the Microwave Sounding Unit (MSU) observations to generate atmospheric temperature dataset with climate quality. So far, observations from the MSU channels 2, 3, and 4 for NOAA 10, 11, 12, and 14 have been recalibrated using a recently-developed SNO (simultaneously nadir overpasses) sequential non...
